About your instructor

Carl Schonborn is a chemical engineer with over 30 years of experience in the process design, installation and maintenance of refinery and petrochemical units. His expertise spans project engineering management, proposal management, and HAZOP facilitation, with a proven track record in the startup and commissioning of multiple refinery unit operation projects.

A registered Professional Engineer with the Engineering Council of South Africa (Pr. Eng.) and a member of the South African Institute of Chemical Engineers (S.A.I.Ch.E), Carl holds a B.Sc. in Chemical Engineering from the University of the Witwatersrand. He is a Certified PHA–HAZOP Leader through TüV Nord and has completed the IChemE Introduction to HAZOP training series.

Carl has been a HAZOP facilitator for projects at major South African refineries, fuel storage terminals, and internationally in the UAE. To expand access to professional HAZOP training globally, he has developed and launched his own comprehensive online course, enabling participants to gain practical skills and earn certification in HAZOP methodology.

Carl lives in the small coastal town of Hermanus, South Africa.
